Texas Joins War on Deadbeats

In the wee hours of the morning, while others were fast asleep in their beds, police in Tarrant County, Texas were getting ready for a hunt. They were on the prowl for the areas worst child support offenders, and while some were able to elude capture and arrest, many were not, and police were able to round up thirty six deadbeat dads and haul them off for failure to pay child support.

This particular precinct has collected roughly four million dollars during this year alone in delinquent child support, which leads one to ponder exactly how much back child support is owed throughout the United States, and why so many parents are not paying to support the children that they are creating. Is this a problem with society, or a problem with how the system is set up and run?

One man, refusing to give up on his freedom, flat out refused to come out of him home, that is of course until the local power company came to shut off power to his residence, since he had illegally spliced into his neighbors line and was using it to power his own house. Apparently not up for a stand off with police sans lights and climate control the man, who fully admitted to knowing of the warrant out for his arrest for failure to pay his court ordered child support, gave in once the lights gave out.

Many states have begun cracking down on child support offenders this year, in an attempt to collect the delinquent amounts and fix what is most definitely a broken system all the way around. However with some of the offenders who were rounded up in this last game of deadbeat cat and mouse, living with girlfriends whom had warrants out of their own, we are once again left to ponder the question, is it really the system that is so screwed up, or has society in all its glory finally gone ahead and flushed its moral compass down the crapper?

Down the crapper is an excellent question. It seems hard to believe that so many non-custodial parents don't pay. No doubt there are genuine bad guys and bad girls. My question is what does 'fix' mean with regard to the system. A more rapid escalation of bad things happening to the deadbeat, or an honest reappraisal of the fairness of the system in ther first place?

Parents need to pay, but it should never be a tool for a vindictive ex to use for harassment, or to make the other parent go away. John
