Online Support Groups: Part Two

Online support groups can be an absolutely wonderful tool when it comes to dealing with stepparent issues, stepparent adoption issues, as well as day-to-day struggles. When searching for an online support group it is important to ask yourself what you want out of the support group, and what setting you would be most comfortable in. Many enjoy the fact that the groups use screen names instead of real names, as well as acronyms, and initials so that people still retain a fair amount of amenity, while still being able to get a lot of information out at the same time.

Some support groups are very large, having several hundred members and are extremely active. While others have a select group of members keeping things smaller, while still remaining active. Some groups have a minimum posting requirement, meaning that the members must post (write a message on the support group message board) so many times per month in order to maintain their status as a member, while other groups do not mind ‘lurkers’ which is the title given to those whom join support groups and read others posts, but do not post themselves.

Some online support groups are also very strict when it comes to the content of their member’s posts. Many online support groups desire their member’s to stay on topic, and post only about topics that relate to what the support group is about. This can account for why some support groups have almost only negative vents, rants, and questions about stepparent related issues, and very little off handed good stuff thrown in, as it can be considered off topic, or members may be fearful of posting such things when they are not sure what exactly is off or on topic, so they simply go with the flow of what was already prevalent on the boards when they joined.

It is important that you read through the rules and requirements of the groups before you join, and make sure that what the group requires of you is something that you can handle, before you go a head and as to join. It is also important to keep in mind that most people go looking for support when they are in need of help. Many of the posts will be from depressed, distraught, or angry parents, stepparent, or adoptive stepparent whom are at their wits end and looking for help. This in no way means that all situations such as yours, or ones matching the description of the group end badly, it simply means that people do not need support when things are going well, so they rarely post when things do go well. It can be easy to become overwhelmed by the multitude of negative posts one sees on a support board, just keep in mind that all families have their ups and downs, and simply seem to be more vocal about the downs!
