Nolo's IEP Guide: Learning Disabilities

I checked this book out of our local library when we were having trouble getting and I.E.P for my adopted stepson. Once we had been turned down, I was more determined than ever to get him the help that he needed. This book helped me in so many ways, and made me aware of rights that I never knew that I had. With some of the knowledge that I was able to learn from this book, I was able to go up against the board again, who already didn’t like me for not simply ‘going away.’ Even with their prejudices that they had against me from my constant fighting and not giving into them, we were able to win our case, and begin to get my son the help that he needed in school.

I am very glad to have stumbled upon this book at the library, and to be truthful, I even renewed it twice so that I could really study what it had to say while I was waiting for our next meeting with the school. Had I had bought my own, I know that it would be filled with highlighter marks. The book is available from Nolo.com in paperback for $25.49, or for those who simply can’t wait, or don’t have the time to wait, you can avoid not only the time of shipping, but the cost as well by downloading the e-book version for a lower price of $22.49 (PDF 3.9MB)

I am a teacher and I see a lot of kids going without the services they need. Parents give up or don't know what to do. I will have to check that book out. I am so happy that you did what you had to do to get your child the help he needs.
Good Luck.

Congrats Julie on being a fabulous advocate mom! I'm so glad you got the school to do what your son needs. I know you will be keeping an eye on them!

Thanks for the resource book suggestion, too. I am not familiar with it - only familiar with similar publications available through www.wrightslaw.com.

The other poster is right -- so many parents give up or don't even know what their children's rights are. It is SO sad!
