Man Wrongly Jailed For Failure To Pay Child Support

With so much attention in the news this year on how states are cracking down on deadbeat parents and collecting past due child support, it seemed as though it was only a matter of time before a situation like this arose in all of the frenzied chaos of 'hurry up and get the money.' While many, if not all, of our Nation's states agree that non-custodial parents should pay their court ordered child support, more and more are now stepping up and agreeing that perhaps how that child support is collected may need a miniscule overhaul itself.

In a react first and ask questions later fashion, the state of Massachusetts picked up John Caliri for non-payment of child support. Claiming that he was just over two thousand dollars behind in his monthly child support obligation to his ex-wife and three children. John was baffled, as his support has always been taken directly out of his checks, so he went to court to explain that their must have been some sort of mistake, and indeed there was.

It would appear as though the business that John had been working for previously which failed and closed due to financial reasons, took the money out of poor old John's paycheck, but never sent it on to the child support collection agency. Someone, somewhere along the lines, pocketed the money instead of forwarding it on to where it needed to go, leaving John Carili in quite the pickle. And while the person who took the money is still walking the streets with some extra holiday money stuffed in their pockets, John, who went to court to explain his plight and show proof of his history of good payments, was listened to, and consequently jailed. He was not only floored by the judge's decision, but by his attitude as well. John's previous employer, which went under, was a pizza shop, and adding insult to injury after finding him in contempt, the judge apparently let out a snide comment, letting John know that if he was still interested in working in a pizza shop, one down the road was indeed hiring.

While many non-custodial parents complain of an unfair and unjust child support system, few stories such as this one, which prove that communication among other things within the system has broken down, seem to make their way to the lime light. Stories that proclaim the different state's successes in collecting child support are broadcast quite frequently, yet the stories that paint a more troubling picture of overly inflated child support payments, and unfair treatment of non-custodial parents find the road to the spot light to be quite the uphill climb.
