Yesterday the first snow fall of the season began to fall, prompting schools to close a few hours early, and myself to just go ahead and pick both of the boys up from school even earlier in an attempt to keep them off of the icy roads before they got too terrible. Both young guys were quite happy to be pulled from school early, beaming from ear to ear as they shot their classmates that 'ha ha I get to go home now and you don't' smile.
I knew that my day was pretty much shot when it came to getting anything that I had planned done once the boys came home, so I got a few important tasks finished before hopping into the car and very slowly making my way towards each of their schools. The
roads were already quite slick, and I was sure glad that they would not be on the bus in a few hours, when the roads would have been even worse.

After we arrived home and got settled in, the kids began to beg for the inevitable, they wanted to go and play in the snow, and not just with each other, but they wanted mom to go out into that freezing cold air, and blowing wind and play too. It took a little bit of bugging, but I finally relented and we all got bundled up and ventured outside into the cold, wintery wonderland.
We had such an amazing time together! We threw
snowballs at each other, we ran around, we slipped, and fell, and laughed, dodged, and hid. No one fussed, no one whined, and no one was mean to anyone else, it was truly just a blast and a great time was had by each of us. We ended up staying out much later than I had initially intended on, but got so wrapped up in the fun myself, that I lost track of time, and once I realized that it was pretty much dark outside and we were all getting pretty wet, I wrangled everyone in and we had some hot coco together to help warm us up.
Last year my adopted stepson and I enjoyed a good snowball fight between the two of us, but he would
not include his little brother in the fun, shooing him off whenever the little guy tried to get involved. This year, however, he allowed his little brother to smack a few snowballs on him, and tossed some back, and they even chased each other around the yard. It was so heartwarming to see the
two of them playing so nicely together, and enjoying it so immensely. It was nice to see everyone let loose and just have a good time together. With everyone completely engrossed in the moment, there were no adoption issues, no grief, no loss, no anger or trust issues. There was nothing more than fun, cold snow, and some great bonding and memory making!
