Yesterday I wrote about National Adoption Awareness Month, and how even if you have not celebrated, or gotten involved in the past, you can always start now. But some of you may be sitting at your computers scratching your heads as to how to go about getting involved in National Adoption Awareness Month, and what you can do to help educate others about adoption.
adoption.com has come up with a wonderful way to help inspire others on how to promote adoption, and get the word out not only about National Adoption Awareness Month, but about the joys and struggles of adoption itself. A
thirty day calendar can be found on their site, with each day boasting a new idea on how to get involved with National Adoption Awareness Month.
The idea for today, November 1, 2007 is to get involved with your local library. Check out the
bookstore at
adoption.com and make a list of all of your favorite adoption related books that you would like to see offered at your local library, or even your local bookstore, and then give them the list that you have created, asking if they would be so kind as to add these books to their inventory.
If you are looking for something a little more hands on for your National Adoption Awareness Month activities, you can always volunteer to set up the book display, and check in every few days to see how the display is doing, and which books are flying off of the shelves. Not creatively inclined? If setting up a display is not your forte, then try asking the library if you can set up some story times for the younger children, where you can read adoption related books to the little kiddies. Most libraries offer a story time where parents can come in with their children and listen to a story, or perhaps a few stories (depending on the length of the books that are being read) and are usually very happy to get volunteers in to help out and read to the kids. You can create your own adoption related posters and handouts for the library, or use one of the many currently available, such as
this one, from Adoptive Families Magazine.
If your library cannot buy any books currently due to low funds, consider donating a few of your favorites to get their collection of books on adoption rolling, or you can organize a fundraiser to help the library raise the money to buy all of the books on the list that you created. Whether you have a lot of time and money to donate, or just a tad, there are plenty of ways to get out there and get the word out about adoption!
