First Day Of School

Today marks the first day of school for both of my boys. My adopted stepson was up early this morning, before the sun, getting ready for his first day of tenth grade. As if having a tenth grader wasn’t depressing enough, my youngest son began his first day of Kindergarten today as well. I must say that so far this morning, he has handled it much better than I have! I did manage to get all the way out of his classroom before leaning against the wall in the hallway and crying over the fact that my baby is no longer a baby, and ready for school.

My adopted stepson seemed less nervous than he has in the past for the first day of school, and was in good spirits this morning as he darted from one room to another making sure that he had everything that he wanted to bring to school with him. He chatted some, but was so focused on what he was doing and zooming around the house so much that we didn’t really have too much of a chance to talk about the upcoming school day. His father too, tends to keep himself quite busy when he is anxious, so I figured it was best not to hound him with a ton of questions, but instead let him tell me all about his day once he get homes this afternoon.

The little guy however, was not running around this house this morning, desperately trying to keep himself busy, but was instead enjoying a nice plate of scrambled eggs, while watching SpongeBob Squarepants in his pajamas. He was very excited about his very first day of school, until of course we got there and tried to leave him. I say tried because had it not been for my husband gently coaxing me out the door when my little man called out “mommy wait” I would have turned around, collected his things and taken him home. In fact last night, just before going to bed, I firmly told my husband “if other moms are staying in the classroom, then I can stay too.” He smiled, gave him a hug while chuckling and gave me a squeeze while he said “yes, dear” in his best TV husband voice. He has had to talk school up to me, just as I have had to do to the boys these past few weeks.

While I have been telling the children how much fun they will have in school this year, my husband has been telling me how much fun I will have with them both in school for the first time. Okay honey, they’re gone…when exactly does the fun get here? He told me to think of all the work that I will be able to get done without the kids underfoot all day long. And initially I thought, gee that does sound good, six hours of uninterrupted time to get everything done, yeah right. They have both been gone for hours now already, and not much has been accomplished other than downloading the traditional stand in front of the door with your backpack on, first day of school pictures, and emailing them out. Besides that there has been some crying, calling grandma to let her know how the first morning of school went, and you guessed it, more tears over how big my boys both are already. I did manage to put the dishes in the sink this morning. See, I worked, no one bothered me…can they come home now?
