It's time again to look at another helpful tip from the
adoption.com's
thirty day calendar of ideas on how to celebrate National Adoption Awareness Month. The tip for
today is to get your local churches involved by planning a worship service that delivers a message about adoption.
There are many different ways that churches can involve adoption during National Adoption Month, and most will be glad to do something to help promote adoption and advocate for the thousands of children waiting in foster care, as well as to celebrate the families in their own congregation whom have come together through adoption. The first step in getting a church involved is to contact the church and set up an appointment.
Be sure to bring some
materials with you about National Adoption Month, not everyone has heard of this celebration and will appreciate having some reading material to look over instead of having to research the entire thing on their own. Once you have filled them in on what National Adoption Month is, you can discuss how the church can get involved. Perhaps they could do a sermon about children and adoption, or print something in their weekly bulletin that sheds light on National Adoption Month.
A get together can be held at the church, either after a church service, or during the week, which can focus on National Adoption Month, and what others can do to help. These meetings can be a lot of fun, especially when everyone brings a dish to share, then it becomes a pot-luck with a purpose, and a darn good one at that. If you wish to pass out materials to those attending, be sure to put an R.S.V.P. number in the bulletin so that you can get a handle on how many people will be attending so that you know roughly how many materials to bring. Bringing a few extra, just in case, is always a good idea. Some people may show up who forgot to respond to the bulletin, and others may wish to bring information to someone else they know who doesn't attend the church but would be interested in National Adoption Month.
Even if you do not currently belong to a church you can call around and see if any of your local churches will honor National Adoption Month, you may be quite surprised as to how many jump on board, regardless of your own religion or your membership status. Many religious organizations have adoption programs and are interested in helping children, so celebrating National Adoption Month and getting the word out about all of the children waiting in foster care helps them as well, as their goal is to help the children and promoting adoption does just that!
